My husband, Damon, and I have been on some amazing adventures. Backpacking across Europe, hiking 14ers, skiing double blacks, and zip-lining through the Costa Rican rain forest to name a few… But 2015 brought about our greatest adventure yet… parenthood.

The birth of our daughterParenthood and Passports- Motherhood: Learning as we go

I kicked off 2015 with swollen ankles. I was giant and at that point in pregnancy where you’re just done being pregnant. We were excited and ready to meet our daughter. Her travel-themed nursery was finished, all of her tiny baby clothes were washed and hung in the closet according to size, and dozens of adorable cloth diapers were neatly folded on the shelves. We were patiently (and sometimes not so patiently) waiting for her arrival. Avery was born February 2, on Groundhog’s Day, quite fitting for the first child of a meteorologist. It was love at first sight. Crazy, intense, insane love. And that love has grown every day since then.

It’s been a wild ride. There have been ups and downs, highs and lows. Nursing brought out a range of emotions and hormones I wasn’t used to. I was cry-at-commercials-crazy. But it also a closeness and bond with my daughter that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Early adventures in parenthood

Damon and I were introduced to a new side of each other and a new side of ourselves as we clumsily navigated through this new adventure called parenthood.Parenthood and Passports - parenthood

Having a child didn’t change us entirely though. Our love for travel and adventure still remain. Although 2015 was probably our least traveled year, we still managed to take our little lady to 2 different countries and 4 states. Even though it has been difficult, she’s been a trooper through it all. She actually is a pretty good traveler. We have a lot in store for 2016. Already, we have plans to visit Belize, Germany, Poland and Czech Republic. We cannot wait to show our baby more of this amazing world!

In three weeks, Avery will go with us on her first ski trip. Although I’ve already learned she doesn’t care for the snow, and she is far too young for ski school, I’m sure we will find a lot of fun things to do with our sweet girl in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Over the last 11 months, Avery has grown from a tiny newborn to a crawling, cruising, dancing, babbling, happy toddler. She makes us laugh every day with her funny personality and makes us proud as she learns new things and reaches each precious milestone.

Parenthood is the greatest adventure. But part of what makes this adventure so special is being able to teach this tiny human about life. Hopefully, through travel we will mold her into a the type of person who will make this planet a better place.
